Psalm 22 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
My God, my God,
Why have you forsaken me?
Why are you far from me
And so far from saving me.
I cry all day,
But you don’t answer me;
My words full of groaning, much groaning
Continue all night.
Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One
You are the praise of Israel.
In you did our fathers put all their trust.
They cried out to you and they were saved.
I am a worm
And I am not a man,
Despised by the people who mock me
And scorned by men.
They hurl insults,
They look and shake their heads;
He trusts in the LORD, his delight,
Let him rescue him.
Yet you who have brought me out of the womb;
At my mother’s breast I trusted you.
From birth I was yours; you have been my God.
Be close to me now for trouble is near.
Strong bulls surround
And they encircle me;
As lions who tear at their prey;
They roar at me.
I am poured out;
My bones are out of joint.
My heart turns to wax and the wax
It melts within me.
My strength’s dried up;
My tongue sticks to my mouth.
They lay me in dust, there are dogs
The dogs surround.
Men circle me,
And they pierce my hands and feet;
Divide up my garments among them;
Cast lots for my clothes.
But you LORD are close, quickly come, be my strength.
Help me, deliver my life from death.
Save my precious life from the biting of dogs,
From the mouth of the lion, the horn of the ox.
But you heard the cry
Of the afflicted one.
Your face was not hidden
From all of his sufferings.
So join our theme,
Of thanks and praise to him;
All Jacob’s descendents and all those
Who fear the LORD.
So come now to worship him, may your hearts live,
You families of nations who bow to God;
You rich men and poor men, who kneel before him;
‘He’s done it’, his righteousness saves us through him.
Yes come now to worship, you ends of the earth;
Assemblies of people throughout the world.
For he rules the nations, dominion is his,
And all future peoples proclaim him for ever.
