Help us LORD,
The godly are no more,
And faithful ones
They have vanished from men.
And everyone
To his neighbour is gone,
Their flattering lips
Speak lies and deception to them.

And may the LORD,
Cut off all flattering lips,
And boastful men
Who think they own their own tongues:
For they will say
“We’ll triumph with our tongues.
We own our own lips
And who can be master of us?”

The needy groan,
The weak are sorely oppressed,
And so the LORD
Says “I will arise,
I’ll make them safe
From all who persecute them.”
Now God’s words are pure,
Like silver refined in the fire.

Keep us LORD,
O LORD please keep us safe.
And shelter us
From all wicked men.
They strut about;
Are praised for all that they do.
Though all that they do
Is vile and evil to you.

Keep us LORD,
O LORD please keep us safe.
And shelter us
From all wicked men.
For your word stands
And it is flawless and true,
Like silver refined
Seven times in a furnace of clay.

Lies and exaggerations bombard us. Advertisers seduce us and now that we live in an era of fake news it is hard to know what is true and who we can trust.

Alongside all the promises of success flaunted on our screens, the reality is that the poor are still with us

and in need of help. Thank goodness for the charities and aid agencies who are committed to improving their well-being. And thank God too, for he is faithful and true to his word. Here in this psalm he declares that he will intervene and protect all those who are needy and oppressed.
